Amazing person: Jason Beghe

Real. No facade. A straight shooter. Warm. Generous.

There is no beating around the bush with Jason Beghe. In stark contrast to the usual Hollywood PR personae, he stands out as the genuine human being he is. Honest about his own feelings in any situation. It is very understandable that he left the Church of Scientology, where PR is the real currency since decades. His exit in 2005 marked a new high in honesty and to-the-point communication.

I stayed with Jason for a few days back in 2009, right after my own exit. Excellent hospitality, a loving family, and Jason was remarkably easy to get along with. We quickly got down to a real and honest, deep level communication. Even after months of not being in touch, we just pick it up where we last ended off.

Jason is intelligent, unbreakable, generous and funny.

And he understands people. He is able to take on a wide range of viewpoints and really understand where others are coming from.

I regard Jason as a soul mate. He is a remarkable human being.

Amazing person: Bjørn Bjercke

When I first met Bjørn, he was in a very dark place. A mutual friend recommended to Bjørn that he contact me for help. I very quickly recognized something special in Bjørn. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it, but there was some hidden quality that was buried under a pile of problems. So I struck a deal with him; I help fix your life, you help me master the snowboard.

The hidden quality turned out to be Will. Pure will. The guy was responsive, bright and very attentive. With a no-fuss approach, he went straight into action mode and cleaned up problem after problem until there was nothing left to worry about. It took some 10 weeks of hard work until he erupted with a big smile “I feel great”.

Summer came and went. Autumn just the same. After first snow I got a text message telling me it’s time to hit the slopes. Soon after I was at the top looking down with a snowboard firmly attached to my legs.

Last time I tried this dangerous sport was some 10 years earlier. During my four attempts that time, I managed to get two concussions and three broken ribs, until I decided to quit before I would kill myself. This time, it turned out, I was in the hands of an incredible teacher. You will search long and hard to find a more warm and caring teacher than Bjørn. And for the first time, I managed to get down a big slope without punishing my body. I was nowhere near the skills of Magic Bjørn, but I was proud as punch.

Magic Bjørn possesses that top quality of giving without thought of reward. He’s always there when I need someone to talk to. I am proud to have him as a good friend.

“Det er ikke hvordan du har det, men hvordan du tar det” (Bjørn)

Amazing person: Ole Wiik

Creativity, abundance of great ideas, caring. Ole Wiik is engaged in so many projects and for so many people, I’ve simply lost the count. Charity work, work for the local community, the man behind “Pinåsløpet” where top athletes start off in his garden, runs straight up and many kilometers later passes the goal line in his back yard…

…and the “Trollfoss” adventures.

Ole gives without thought of reward.

Ole is the quickest person I have coached – he instantly (and I mean instantly) made visible and valuable improvements. He is a very good friend, listener and fellow brain stormer.

Amazing person: A. K. Datta

Come in, Sir“… “I heard that you can remember your past lives?

Yes“, I uttered before the barrage of questions was fired at me while he guided me to sit in the sofa: “Have you always been a man? A woman? How was it? Ever occupied an animal body? How does it feel to depart from the body at death? How does it feel to take on a new body? How do you know which one to take? By your own volition? What about destiny? Free will?…

I answered and answered and answered. As fast as I could.

After about an hour of this one-way-interview, I gave the time-out signal with my two hands and said: “You are easily the most interested person I have ever met. You are amazingly interested, which to me is much more interesting than a person being interesting. But I do have a few questions of my own. Can I?

He smiled gently, paused and said “Go ahead“.

But his interest in me, my experiences and knowledge wouldn’t be short-changed, and in between my questions and his very wise answers, he fired another one right back at me.

I learned that he had been the head surgeon at the biggest hospital in India before he in 1984 decided to devote his life to Hinduism. Not any regular branch of the religion where they worship Gods and Goddesses. The All World Gayatri Pariwar worships what makes Gods and Goddesses – the concepts of Knowledge and Wisdom. With the largest privately owned library in the country and with running a university where you can get a masters degree or even a PhD in Yoga, meditation and spiritualism – they are devoted to the spreading of knowledge. And they do so by setting an excellent example, such as traveling to villages across the country, cleaning the streets, cleaning up conflicts between people, teaching literacy and promoting ethical living, all while ensuring that locals take on the responsibility for each before they leave the village. They participate in many charitable causes, global peace initiatives and more. Dr. Datta himself has been on the panel of various UN initiatives.

Like Dr. Datta, the leaders of the religion are highly trained with backgrounds ranging from clinical psychologists, biologists and nuclear scientists. They do research into the realm of science and religion and the often invisible bridge in between.

Dr. Datta resembled an eager 4-year old with the wisdom of Yoda – youthful in his intense interest, wise in his profound answers. I learned that he is the second-in-command of this religion numbering some 20 million active followers.

I met him in Oslo in 2003 and decided to pay their headquarters a visit in March the following year.

Getting off the train in the holy city of Haridwar, I was greeted by Dr. Datta as well as the finance director of the religion, Dr. Gupta. He would be my guide during my three days stay at their Shantikunj.

I have never experienced such hospitality. Dr. Datta, a man of science, wisdom, interest and compassion ensured my stay was an adventure to be remembered.

I will never forget. And I will return to Haridwar.

Amazing person: Kristin Størmer Steira

Not only because she is one of the world’s top athletes, among the elite cross country skiers. And not just because she is the most dedicated and focused person I have met. But because she harbors a human quality I admire even more.

Kristin Størmer Steira has been a consistent top performer for years. She is a 24/7 athlete working out twice a day – sun rain or hail – she gets out and exercises more per day than I do in a year. Although that may change with her persistent nudging and insistence that I join her in the soon-to-be snow covered tracks behind my house. Her fervent desire to achieve her greatest was clear from the first time I met her.

While focus and dedication is the bread and butter of top athletes, single-mindedness, egoism and even dismissiveness may follow suit. Not so with Kristin. Her empathy is rather surprising given her determination for gold. She is warm-hearted and cares about much more than skiing and sports. Her balanced views recently came through with a post on her new blog (thanks Brendan) where she counters upon the view of another skier’s mental coach. He claimed that athletes who wanted to reach the top should drop education. Kristin managed to get her in marketing, positioning her well in the future when her skiing career is over. In the meantime, you can follow her on her blog and her new Facebook official fan page (thanks Niklas).

Kristin shows an amazing balance of focus and dedication and empathy and spirit of play. And she gets stuff really quickly. A smart one she is.

Amazing person: Brendan Martin

The first time I saw Brendan, he was busy entertaining a whole school yard full of kids and parents. With three torches flying and a burning bicycle balancing on his head, the crowd was cheering and having great fun. So I decided to hire him. The best recruitment I ever did – out of more than 2000 recruitments over the years.

It’s hard to do Brendan justice through a simple blog post like this. He is the one person I know that can deliver just about anything. Whatever he sets out to do, he can get it done – from running the half marathon remarkably fast, beating the crap out of me on the pool table, mastering golf and becoming the best foosball player in Norway – to consistently creating value in business projects. Brendan is the most direct and honest person I have met. He would tell the President of the United States exactly what he thinks with no holds barred. In a war, he is the one I would want to have as my wing man.

I am honored to share my workday with Brendan – and because of that I now call it my playday.

His childhood was remarkable, being the son of “Romeo and Juliet” with one family high on the Unionist side and the other at the top of the IRA. He has learned a lot in his life – but more importantly, he can teach and inspire others. Being a Montessori teacher and a prize winning instructor of business courses, he can spell-bind an audience and get them to get it. Whatever “it” is.

I am personally on a quest for less security, certainty, comfort and solidity in life. And with Brendan as a partner, there’s always a surprise lurking.

Surprises can be found over at his blog.

This marks the start of a new series of posts on this blog. More amazing people to come.
